Orthopaedic Instruments

Orthopaedic Instruments

Orthopaedic instruments are used for bone surgery procedures for both humans and animals. There are variety of different types of orthopaedic instruments we will discuss some of the common in detail.

  1. Osteotomes

An osteotome is an instrument used for cutting or preparing bone. Osteotomes are like a chisel but bevelled on both sides. They are used today in plastic surgery, orthopaedic surgery and dental implantation. Osteotomes are made of stainless steel and produced with stainless handles or phenolic handles. They are made in different sizes and shapes.

  1. Bone Cutting Forceps

They are designed to cut or removing the bones during orthopaedic procedures. Bone cutting forceps are commonly used for both humans and veterinary surgeries. Bone cutting forceps are an essential instrument to be used in complex orthopaedic instrument surgeries to cut through bone to reach the eye for operation and inspection. They are made of medical grade stainless steel and designed for heavy duty jobs. They are made in different sizes and shapes also comes with carbide tungsten tip.

  1. Orthopaedic Saws

Most orthopaedic procedures involve using sawblades for cutting bones either during arthroplasty or for performing osteotomy and re-alignment procedures. In the past, manual and gigli type of saws were used. This has now been replaced by the use of pneumatic and electric saws

  1. Bone Holding Forceps

They are designed to hold or grasp the bone during complex orthopaedic procedures. There are different types of bone holding forceps, Plate Holding Forceps, Bone Reduction Forceps, Dingmans Forceps, Lowman Bone Clamp, Kern Bone Holding Forceps, Self-centring bone holding forceps.

  1. Implant Cutters

Implant Wire and Pin cutters are designed for heavy duty jobs some implant cutters come with carbide tungsten tip. Due to the strength of implants, cutting them with a hacksaw would be hard work and very time consuming. Surgical finish stainless steel with TC inserts – suitable for appropriate sizes of hard wires. A rongeur is heavy-duty surgical veterinary instrument with a sharp-edged, scoop-shaped tip, used for gouging out bone. Rongeur is a French word meaning rodent or 'gnawer'. A rongeur can be used to open a window in bone, often in the skull, in order to access tissue underneath.

  1. Retractors

retractor is a surgical instrument used to separate the edges of a surgical incision or wound, or to hold back underlying organs and tissue so that body parts under the incision may be accessed. The general term retractor usually describes a simple handheld steel tool possessing a curved, hooked, or angled blade and fitted with a comfortable handle, that when in place maintains the desired position of a given region of tissue. These simple retractors may be handheld, clamped in place, or suspended at the end of a robotic arm. Retractors can also be self-retaining and not need to be held once inserted by having two or more opposing blades or hooks which are separated via spring, ratchet, worm gear or other method. The term retractor is also used to describe distinct, hand-cranked devices such as rib spreaders (also known as thoracic retractors, or distractors) with which surgeons may forcefully drive tissues apart to obtain exposure. For specialized situations such as spinal surgery, retractors have been fitted both with suction and with fibreoptic lights to keep a surgical wound dry and illuminated.
